It’s a key component in high-energy rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, widely used in laptops, cell phones, and, increasingly, electric vehicles. As concerns about carbon emissions and rising hydrocarbon fuel costs grow, lithium’s role in large batteries for all-electric and hybrid vehicles has become more crucial. To power an electric vehicle for a 40-mile trip, approximately 1.4 to 3.0 kilograms of lithium (or 7.5 to 16.0 kilograms of lithium carbonate) is needed before recharging.
